Help / Edit in 3D
Edit the model
Select buildings, roads, water, and parks to remove them, recolor them, or change their size.
Press Edit at the top right of the 3D view to change the model before it's downloaded. The editor is marked as a beta. Edits are saved in this browser and go into every download.
Select things
- Click a building, road, path, park, tree, body of water, or route to select it. Click empty space to clear the selection.
- Shift-click or Ctrl-click to add or remove one thing. Shift-drag to select everything in a box.
- Select several (M) does both without holding a key. On a touch screen, a tap with it adds or removes one thing.
- On a map data model, with nothing selected, the editor's card has a search box. Type at least two letters of a name to find a street, building, park, water, or route.
- Alt-click a building mapped in parts to select only that part.
Change what's selected
The card beside the model shows what can be changed:
- Remove
- Removes it from the model. A removed road or building gives its ground back to the park or plaza around it. For water the button is Leave out, and the water is filled with ground, unless Keep the hollow is ticked to leave the recess for resin or paint. With Structures in water set to Rest on the water the ground is always filled in, since what rested on the water would have nothing under it. Restore undoes it.
- Height
- For buildings, roads, and land cover. Dragging the blue arrow on top of a selected building sets it too. A building's height is kept in real meters, so it follows the scale.
- Bring raised parts down to the ground
- For a building with parts that start above the ground, like a skybridge or an overhang. It takes the place of the setting of the same name under Buildings for that building. Off, the parts stay raised and need supports in the slicer.
- Width
- For roads, paths, and bridges.
- Color
- Pick New color... to make a custom color, or put it in an existing one. See below.
- Reset
- Undoes every change to what's selected.
A gap filled by Join buildings closer than belongs to the building whose height it takes, and is selected and colored with it. Remove a building beside it or change its height, and the gap is opened or filled again to suit the buildings left.
In the editor a click selects. To change something for everything of its kind, like every highway, use the sliders button at the top of the card. It goes to those settings in the sidebar.
Removed things are hidden and can't be clicked. To get one back later, clear the selection and use the link that counts them in the card, like 3 removed. It selects them all, then Restore brings them back.
LiDAR buildings and routes
- A building measured with LiDAR has Use original building, to build it from the map instead when the scan looks wrong. Use LiDAR building switches it back.
- A selected route has Edit on the map, which opens the route editor. On a bridge, the route covers the deck, so Select bridge picks the bridge under it.
Road blocks
Clicking a road selects one block of it, between junctions, so a change only applies to that stretch. Whole street selects every connected piece with the same name. Split a road (X) ends a block at the point clicked, and clicking an orange split joins it again. Make it a drawn road swaps the block for a drawn road that can be reshaped point by point.
Bridges
With Bridges on under Layers, a selected bridge has Make it a road. It lays the bridge on the ground as an ordinary road, along with any bridges joined to it, so no bridge is left ending in the air. Make it a bridge again puts it back.
Land cover
Parks, lawns, plazas, and forest can be selected one area at a time. Change its Surface, give it its own Height, or Grow or shrink its outline. When it's removed, whatever is mapped under it shows instead, like the park a plaza was cut out of, or else the bare ground.
Terrain
Lumps in the ground, where roads climb over a building that the elevation data picked up, can be painted out with the terrain brushes. See Smooth the terrain.
Custom colors
A custom color gives everything in it a filament of its own, like a street in red or a favorite route. Each one exports as its own part.
- Select what should get the color.
- Open Color in the card and pick New color....
- Click the swatch to choose the filament. Add more things to it the same way.
With nothing selected, the card lists the custom colors, which can be renamed, recolored, or deleted there.
Undo and saved edits
- Ctrl+Z undoes an edit and Ctrl+Y redoes it while the editor is open. Undo all, in the card with nothing selected, clears every edit on every area, not only this model's, with a backup that can be put back.
- A big edit can take a moment. If Still updating the model stays up, Stop ends it, and the model has to be generated again to show the latest edits.
- Edits follow map features, not the shape of the model, so they stay when settings change and the model is generated again.
- The map data is updated every month. A building or road that gets redrawn in an update gets a new ID, and an edit on it stops applying.
- Share links and settings files can carry edits. See Save, share, and settings files.
Press Edit again to stop editing. Edits are kept.
