Help / Build a model
Routes and racetracks
Print a run, ride, hike, or race lap on the model in its own color.
Add a route
- Import route under Routes reads GPX, KML, KMZ, TCX, FIT, and GeoJSON files, also zipped or gzipped. Activities and routes exported from Strava, Garmin Connect, Komoot, or Google My Maps work.
- Files can also be dropped anywhere on the page.
- Try a sample route adds one of eight ready-made routes, like the Brooklyn Bridge Loop, the Bondi Coastal Walk, or the New York City Marathon. The marathon also loads the area, settings, and colors of its example, which fit the five boroughs on 170 mm. If any settings were changed, the message offers Use the example's settings instead. A sample already under Routes isn't added again: it's shown if it was hidden, and the area moves back to it.
- Racetracks adds a lap of one of 166 circuits from Formula 1, MotoGP, NASCAR, IndyCar, and more. Search by circuit, town, or country.
- Draw a route draws a new one on the map. See Edit a route on the map.
If most of a new route is outside the area, the area moves to fit it. Fit area to routes does that again later, and Fit and turn also turns the area when that frames the routes more tightly. With the scale locked, a bigger area can make the print bigger than the bed, and the message offers Scale to the bed.
Route list
Each route has a checkbox to show or hide it, its name, its length, a pencil to edit it on the map, and an X to remove it. Click the name to change it. Hidden routes aren't built into the model or put in share links.
A route removed in the 3D editor stays out of the model, even while it's ticked here, and its row says so. To bring it back, open it in the route editor and press Restore it.
Route settings
- Width
- 1 mm by default, wider than most printed roads, so the route covers the road it follows. If the route is snapped along a road a little wider than that, the whole route uses that road's width, so no strip too thin to print is left beside it.
- Height
- How far it stands above the ground, 0.8 mm by default, so it stands a layer above the 0.6 mm roads.
- Start and finish markers
- A dot at the start and a bar across the finish. A loop only gets the dot, and racetrack laps get neither.
- Snap to roads
- On by default. GPS recordings are often 5 to 10 m off the street, which would print as a wobbly line beside it. This moves the route onto the roads it followed. Stretches away from roads, like a trail, stay as recorded. It needs Roads on.
- Sits on
- Only for LiDAR only models. Top of everything lays the route over bridges, overpasses, and trees so all of it shows. The ground keeps it on the streets, hidden where it went under things.
- Add routes to the model
- Untick it to keep routes on the map without building them.
All routes print in the one Routes color under Colors. To give one route a color of its own, put it in a custom color in the 3D editor.
Limits
- Up to 20 routes, each simplified to at most 10,000 points.
- Files up to 50 MB.
- A route across water with no bridge, like a ferry, stands in the water like a road, as Structures in water says: on a strip of ground, down through the water, or on top of it.
A share link only carries the routes that are shown, cut off about 300 m past the area. To hide where a route starts, like a home address, use Trim start in the route editor.
If the route would otherwise share a color, adding the first route while Filaments available is at the default of 5 raises it to 6. Most themes give routes a color of their own at 5 already.
